Lyrics:

ADRENALINE

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

If you paddle a kayak or canoe
Friend I'm talkin' just to you
Let's get together by the river at the old put-in
And by the time we're takin' out
You'll know just what I'm talkin' about
That old class five whitewater adrenaline

Chorus:
Adrenaline, it's what I crave
Adrenaline, I feel so brave
Adrenaline, I keep comin' back for more
You know it makes my liver quiver
The place to find it's on the river
Adrenaline's gonna keep me there for sure
When I punch a hole or I get flushed
Down through a drop, I get a rush
Oh Lord it feels so good that it's a sin
When I hit an ender with a pirouette
Or a mystery move, buddy you can bet
For sure I'm runnin' on pure adrenaline

Repeat Chorus

Baby this next whitewater run'll
Make you wanta drop your paddle and grab the gunnel
But don't you do it 'cause now the fun'll begin
No shuttle bunny, no shuttle rabbit's
Gonna keep on drivin' once they've got the habit
'Cause they'll be lookin' for more adrenaline

Repeat Chorus

WHEN YOU PULLED OUT WITH YOUR DAGGER (YOU LEFT A BLUE HOLE IN MY HEART)

Brant N. Miller/Patricia B. Miller
(© 1990 Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

I yelled river left, you went river right
We got stuck on a ledge, that started our first fight
When I steered into those strainers, you were not amused
At the takeout you swore "Never again"
As you took off with your canoe

Chorus:
When you pulled out with your Dagger
You left a blue hole in my heart
I'm a class six fool to let a class two
Stream pull us apart
I've cried enough tears tonight
To float from bar to bar
When you pulled out with your Dagger
You left a blue hole in my heart

When we first did it tandem, your J-stroke drove me mad
You looked good in your thigh straps as you
Knelt on your knee pads
But then we went canoein', and things went downstream fast
When you're swimmin' in cold water, the fire just won't last

Repeat Chorus

So come back to me baby, and I'll buy two solo boats
So we can paddle separately and keep out love afloat
The only whitewater that together we will see
Is when we're drinkin' wine and feelin' fine in my Jacuzzi

Repeat Chorus

RIVERLOVE

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

Riverlove
Since I met you by still water
With the stars above
Don't know just what to do
You run so deep
My friends tell me I oughta
Stop losin' sleep
And drift away from you

Riverlove
You whisper that you've never
Known currents of
Your love to be so strong
Then you pretend
That time is just a river
Without an end
We float like leaves along

Riverlove
Every time I try to hold you
I feel you move
I feel you passin' by
You slip away
Like water though my fingers
I linger on
Can't seem to say goodbye

Bridge:
Can't live my life lost in this dream
That's what I try to say
Time and again
The words just drift away

Riverlove
I'm floating with no anchor
Adrift on you
Lost on your endless stream
I've got to swim
I've got to reach the bank or
Be swept beneath
The surface of your dream

Riverlove
Since I met you by still water
With the stars above
Don't know just what to do

RAFTING RHAPSODY

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

Are you goin' nowhere but to your easy chair
Are you bored with the whole situation?
Are you puttin' on pounds, lettin' stress get you down
Overdue for some true relaxation?
So you don't want to hike or go ride a bike
You're not into an art or a craft
Leave your worries behind you, let the river unwind you
Take a whitewater trip on a raft

Chorus:
On a river raft you can loaf and laugh
Float away from all your cares
It'll wake you up, it'll calm you down
In the cool, clean mountain air

Every trip you take on a raft you'll make
New friends from near and far
When it's paddlin' time it's your turn to shine
On a raft you're a whitewater star
So don't hesitate if you want to feel great
Just paddle a raft down the river
You'll be gettin' your fill of excitement and thrills
That only a raft can deliver
A whitewater race, the spray in your face
A raft is your place in the sun
So come on and get free, why not turn off your TV
Ride a raft to some whitewater fun

Repeat Chorus

MY KAYAK AND ME

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

I love my kayak, I hug it so tight
I keep it beside me all through the night
I blow up its airbags, I smooth its sprayskirt
I watch out for rocks just so it won't get hurt
When I'm in my kayak I'm in great company
I take care of it, it takes care of me
I take care of it, it takes care of me
My helmet is cracked, my life jacket's shot
My paddle's in bad shape, I think it's dry rot
But my roof racks are padded, my tiedowns are strong
Wherever I go, my kayak goes along
It's me and my kayak, inseparably
I take care of it, it takes care of me
I take care of it, it takes care of me
When I'm in my kayak and driftin' downstream
All of my troubles they're only a dream
Got no bills to pay, got peace in my soul
When I'm on the river, then I'm on a roll
Roll on in my kayak so wild and so free
I take care of it, it takes care of me
I take care of it, it takes care of me
Yes I'm a kayaker and I know when I die
I'll find that big river up in the sky
Where you run every rapid with just a boat scout
And once you put in, you don't have to take out
And my kayak will be there; I'll take it, you see
I take care of it, it takes care of me
I'll take care of it, it'll take care of me

THERE'S SO MUCH YOU CAN DO IN A CANOE

Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

When you can't stand that nine to five
Load up your canoe and drive
Off to someplace wet to drown your blues
Whether it's a lazy river, a mountain lake
Or fast whitewater
There's so much you can do in a canoe
You can drift and dream all day
Let the current guide your way
Or you can pole upstream if you want to
Join a month-long expedition
Or spend a lazy Sunday fishin'
There's so much you can do in a canoe

Chorus:
You don't need a lot of money, just a little time
A boat that floats and a little water too
Just hold onto the paddle and watch a dream come true
There's so much you can do in a canoe
If you really want some thrills
You can drive up to the hills
Run those rapids, even swim a few
Catch an eddy, surf a wave
Portage if you don't feel brave
There's so much you can do in a canoe

Repeat Chorus

If you paddle silently
Many wonders you will see
Herons, otters, deer and eagles too
Fall in love with nature's gifts
Or with the one you're paddlin' with
There's so much you can do in a canoe

Repeat Chorus

RIVER WALTZ

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

One day the river was risin'
My daddy said that may be fine
But there's more to life than paddlin'
If you're a son of mine
You've got to make somethin' of yourself
Open your eyes, look around
If you're gonna be respectable
Then lay that paddle down
It may be true, it may be false
But I'm gonna do that river waltz

Chorus:
'Cause I'm a kick-ass, hole blastin', squirt boatin' fool
Gonna run every river, gonna break every rule
They'll know my name at every river rodeo
Pretty women run my shuttle everywhere I go
Class six is no big deal
And a class five's just fine
So I'll see you on the river
At the end of the line

One day the river was risin'
My boss said we got that contract
If you don't plan on workin' late
Don't bother comin' back
He said my boy, you could go far
Be a big man in this town
If you give up that river life
And lay that paddle down
It may be true, it may be false
But I'm gonna do that river waltz

Repeat Chorus

One day the river was risin'
My girl said stay here with me
That river's cold, but I'm real warm
I'll keep you company
I'll blow your mind and show you things
That'll turn your head around
Forget about the river
And lay that paddle down
It may be true, it may be false
But I'm gonna do that river waltz

Repeat Chorus

SMOKY MOUNTAIN MORNIN' SONG

Brant N. Miller
(© 1989 Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

Whitewater foamin' on the ragin' river
Rushin' through the laurel covered hills
Soft mist hangin' on the hazy hollows
As we watch the sun rise higher still
Red-tailed hawk soarin' far above us
We've waited to hear his cry so long
To the rhythm of the river
He's joinin' in the chorus
Of another Smoky Mountain mornin' song

Chorus:
A symphony of sight and sound
Greets us with each new dawn
We're part of nature's choir as we sing
Another Smoky Mountain mornin' song
Bear cub playin' in the berry thicket
Rainbow trout glistenin' in the stream
Wildflowers bloomin' on the bald top ridges
A sight no earthly artist could have dreamed
Our hearts feel lighter with each well-earned mile
The clamor of the city's past and gone
Our laughter's so at ease
With the harmonizin' breeze
In another Smoky Mountain mornin' song

Repeat Chorus

WHITEWATER WOMAN

Tom Joy/Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

Wild whitewater woman, for you I'd intrude
On the Green River narrows in my innertube
You know it would trash me from my head to my feet
But I'd do it for you, to win your love so sweet

Chorus:
Paddlin' solo's not all that it's cracked up to be
Need a whitewater woman to paddle with me
Please whitewater woman, come paddle with me
Hey Hiwassee honey, I sure like your style
You've got all those French Broads beat by a mile
And you Big South Fork beauty, it's you that I seek
Won'tcha set up your shuttle on this Daddy's Creek

Repeat Chorus

Dear Doe River darlin', you know very well
For you I would paddle my kayak to hell
I'd body surf Bull Sluice to show you I'm brave
I'll do anything, just let me surf your wave

Repeat Chorus

Sweet Chattooga charmer, please throw me a rope
My heart's takin' a bad swim, you can give it new hope
And Baby Falls baby, won'tcha Z-drag my soul
It's recirculatin' in a bad keeper hole

Repeat Chorus

TALKIN' CANOE BLUES

Brant N. Miller/Tom Joy
(© 1993 Final Vinyl Music/Tom Joy Music, ASCAP)

I was lookin' for somethin' fun to do
So I thought I'd buy me a canoe
The store had one second hand
Not too beat up for half a grand
I said I'll take it
Started writin' a check
The man said hold on son
You still need accessories
So he sold me air bags, dry bags too
A P. F. D. and a paddle or two
A throw rope, helmet, and rescue knife
Some river maps, I was set for life
I was ready
For whitewater
With no money left
To get there
So I joined a canoe club and went to their school
All decked out, was I ever cool
We spent the first day on a lake
I thought this canoein's a piece of cake
I knew a J-stroke
I knew a low brace
I wish I'd a-known
What was a-comin'
Down at the put-in the other folks
Were practicin' their paddlin' strokes
They ferried river left and right
While I just drifted out of sight
Down the river
Goin' backwards
Heard the roar
My first rapids
When I finally got turned around
I wasn't thrilled with what I found
Was headed for a rock, oh durn
When someone shouted, "Eddy turn!"
My name wasn't Eddie
So I didn't turn
I just got pinned
Up against that rock
Well they rescued this poor paddlin' wiener
With rescue ropes and carabiners
That old canoe took quite a blow
But not half as bad as my ego
I was chokin'
My paddle was broken
And I thought things couldn't get any worse
We got to our first class three drop
Scouted it, watched others flop
My heart was beatin' like a drum
Niagara Falls here I come
I found the chute
Perfect entry
Forgot how to brace
But not how to swim
I was about half-starved when we stopped for lunch
Right beside a scraggly bunch
Of local folks who were camped out near
Their necks were red and they sure liked beer
They looked at us funny
And they looked real mean
I wish I'd never seen
"Deliverance"
We finally reached the takeout place
My knees were sore and my head sure ached
My clothes were soaked and my lips were blue
Had new dents in my old canoe
I crawled out of my boat
Someone said, "How about next week?"
I just grinned and said
"Why not!"
I was lookin' for somethin' fun to do
So I thought I'd buy me a canoe

TRIP'S END

Poem: Tom Joy Music: Brant N. Miller
(© 1993 Tom Joy Music/Final Vinyl Music, ASCAP)

Red evening sun reflects from the river-
Paints us all at trip's end.
Boats, cars, wet gear, conversation-
Load up, change, drive home, friend with friend.
Much spoken, much unspoken-
Much felt, but left unsaid-
And underneath it all, the river
Still roars in every head.
